I created this video in response to jowox's great series of videos on male singers with high vocal ranges (http://www.youtube.com/user/jowox). However, I was rather disappointed in his one on Cornell, as it really failed to show his vocal power and style.
I avoided using songs that jowox already had, with the exception of Jesus Christ Pose. I found the notes he sings mostly by ear, with help from the guitar to verify notes when I was uncertain.
I remain convinced that he was and is the greatest rock vocalist there ever was. There may be singers who go higher, but there are none who can match the sheer belting power of Chris Cornell, not even himself these days.
I did not choose merely his highest, but also those that represent his vocal style.
Song 1: Cold Bitch - Soundgarden
A above high C (A5)
Song 2: Smokestack Lightning - Soundgarden
GREAT live clip found on YouTube ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VyrxIijQK8 ). Several powerful high G's (G5).
Song 3: Power Trip - Soundgarden
High G's (G5) in unison with guitar.
Song 4: Jesus Christ Post - Soundgarden
Famous high G (G5) at the end of Jesus Christ Pose.
Song 5: Slaves & Bulldozers - Soundgarden
A high D (D5) and what sounds like a brief high F (F5) or F#.
Song 6: Call Me A Dog - Temple of the Dog.
High E (E5) before guitar solo.
Song 7: Reach Down - Temple of the Dog
Several powerful high E's (E5) and a brief high G (G5) at the end.
I included Reach Down to showcase not only his range, but his singing. He doesn't scream for the hell of it, it is integral to his unique vocal sound which I've yet to hear properly mimicked.
Hope you enjoyed watching this. Be kind in the comments please.
Edit: I changed the title of the video, seems to fit better than the old one. Durata: 3:24 Tags:
