Nonostante la permanenza nel gruppo, comincia a pubblicare album solisti già nel 1998, con The Sky is Too High; divisosi dal gruppo si dedica a tempo pieno alla carriera personale. Tuttora ha sei album solisti pubblicati, di cui tre quando era ancora un membro della band.Durante la sua carriera nei Blur ha sempre avuto divergenze con il front-man del gruppo (Damon Albarn) per i più svariati motivi, una delle quali la sua forte dipendenza dall'alcol, che fortunatamente ha attualmente risolto.Secondo gli "addetti ai lavori" è tecnicamente bravissimo (tra i suoi estimatori si colloca Jonny Greenwood dei Radiohead) ma nettamente mancante dal punto di vista "pubblicitario" a causa della sua riservatezza e della sua scarsa personalità.
