Biografia thumb|left|200px|Gene Pitney con Lorenzo Pilat e con Daniele Pace ; foto tratta da ABC n° 45 del 6 novembre 1966Da adolescente impara a suonare la chitarra, il pianoforte e la batteria; inizia poi a comporre molto giovane canzoni per altri artisti, tra cui ricordiamo quelle di maggior successo: Hello Mary Lou per Ricky Nelson, Rubber ball per Bobby Vee e He's a rebel per le Crystals.Compone anche alcune colonne sonore; debutta poi come cantante nel 1960, ottenendo l'anno successivo un grandissimo successo con Town Without Pity, scritta da Burt Bacharach e Hal David, inserita nella colonna sonora dell'omonimo film, che rimane la sua canzone più nota.Nel 1962 un altro suo successo è Hello, Mary Lou, che Italia verrà incisa due anni dopo da Adriano Celentano come lato B del 45 giri Una notte vicino al mare/Hello Mary Lou.Sempre in Italia, dopo alcuni 45 giri pubblicati anche nella nostra lingua, diviene famoso nel 1964 partecipando al Festival di Sanremo 1964 con Quan
