Nata a Los Angeles da madre afro-americana e padre bianco (un immigrato italiano), Etta è stata una bambina prodigio: a soli 5 anni canta musica gospel nel coro della chiesa. Cresce con le ballate di Billie Holiday e con l' "urlato" rock 'n' roll di Little Richard.Nel 1950 si trasferisce con la madre a San Francisco, e a quattordici anni conosce Johnny Otis grazie al quale forma un gruppo con altre due ragazze "The Creolettes". Decisivo sarà l'incontro con Otis anche per il cambio di nome, ottenuto dalla divisione ed inversione del suo nome di battesimo in Etta James.Legata molto alla città di Chicago, in cui ha sede la "Chess records", etichetta per cui la James inciderà il suo materiale di gran lunga migliore. All I could do was cry, il titolo di uno dei primi successi, è una ballata sofferta ed egregiamente interpretata. Sarà comunque nel 1961, quando incide il singolo At Last, indimenticabile canzone romantica mista di blues e pop, che Etta James otterrà il trionfo internazionale.Da più di 40 anni Etta James continua a cantare con stile e profondità ballate blues, R&B e jazz, non mostrando mai segni di declino. La sua vocalità profonda è in grado di provocare in un attimo gli stati d'animo più appassionati e l'attimo successivo quelli più dolorosi e malinconici.
