Ellen Allien Biografia

BORN I was born in Berlin in 1978. FAMILY My father played guitar and piano and my sister listened to Nina Hagen, Cat Stevens and Pink Floyd all the time. A friend of ours had a juke box and I always got the old singles from that – 80’s and 90’s hits. I listened to them a lot and was sunk in music. This was my favorite thing to do. Or playing the organ that was in our hallway... MUSICAL ROOTS Music has always been my hobby - doing mix tapes, hanging out with friends in rehearsal rooms, doing music with them… I played the sax and the guitar. Music always made me relax and is my everyday companion. It lets my world blossom. 1992 I started to get interested in electronic music. Before that I was into hip hop a lot. But the whole scene got on my nerves and I therefore got more interested in electronic music. There were so many interesting people – artists, gay people, freaks …. With all those people I felt more connected. And I could finally feel free as a woman in a club – no harassment. Back then I got to know people I am still befriended with. It was the new thing then, a big community. I listened to Kraftwerk and NDW. This was the charts stuff. In 1992 I started working at a bar, Fischlabor, whose owner also owned Tresor, and one day spun some records there. This got regular and I later started my own radio shows "Braincandy". I then started to play at E-Werk and Tresor, which became my resident clubs. In 1994 I released my first single. Music has always fascinated me as well as the people who work in that field. It was a whole new environment for me, a great "Do it yourself" attitude. And techno was the music that united East and West in Germany after the wall came down. It was a big help to overcome the past and to look forward to the future. DJING I like playing gigs and I like filling rooms with music and sharing music with people. It's always a challenge to get people going. And each club is different and needs a different atmosphere. My vision is to master each moment as something special. Like last week - I played three gigs in a row - first in Berlin, a 7 hour set. This was great because it allowed me to really plunge into the set. Next day France, Villa Rouge, a great gay club. Red light, firewords and a lot of sexy gay guys. Then I played in Italy in one of the best clubs - Tenx. An overwhelming atmosphere . And very soon I'll play at a big fashion show in New York where the 100 most important New Yorkers are invited - so DJing is really interesting and fun! It’s also really interesting to use different effects and samples to make the mix more exciting. Djing is the best profession ever! I live it with every breath. I mean, I guess I could also do something else, but right now it’s still so much fun that I don’t want to miss it! LABELS & PRODUCTION BPitch Control was born out of an event series I started in 1997. In 1999 it became a label. It's the island for musicians and a booking agency as well. We are trying to create a network that brings us fun, and is creative and functional. Bpitch Control always tries to change itself, to be even more modern, to find new ways. It’s never standing still – the world is changing all the time and so is BPC. Label and artists are working together very tightly. My last productions were remixes for Thom York, Troy Pierce, Kate Wax and Beck. I will soon go back into the studio to do a new single. But first I'll go on a little tour to the U.S. and Brasil. FABRIC I like Fabric - its soundsystem is amazing and they take great care of the artists! Judy is one of the best booking agents in the world – the line up is always great and the selection of mixes on the label really interesting. This club is extremely professional in a good way. THE MIX I wanted to do an analog mix, by hand. I used my favorite records of last year and the newest ones. I like analog! And I like to hear how one has to manipulate the mix until it’s tight. I like the mix because to me it’s the ideal club mix that I personally would like to hear in a club. It’s also a nice memory for me – I can remember every record being played by myself in a club. And when I now listen to the mix I can recall all the great moments. THE FUTURE I am looking forward to summer. There will be a DVD+CD for Time Out where I am kind of a tourist guide for Berlin. I wiill also release my new spring/summer fashion collection, which I am really exciting about. And in April, BPitch will go on tour - yeah! http://www.fabriclondon.com/press/beta/archives/660-Biography-Ellen-Allien.html
